Car tax discs will soon be gone

From October the 1st 2014, you will no longer need to display your car tax disc in your vehicle’s windscreen. If on or after this date you still have a tax disc with months left to run, you can have it removed from your vehicle and destroyed. Due to new technology, police will no longer require to see them as they can use a simple system to see if your registration number has paid their tax. Not only will this new initiative reduce the amount of paper we waste, but will also reduce administration costs, meaning that your car tax will be slightly cheaper than usual; not by a large amount, but definitely a small change that may help in the long run.

You’ll still receive a vehicle tax reminder from the DVLA so you’ll never forget to renew your tax. On your part, there isn’t really much that you need to do. In fact, the new system will be much easier to navigate and from the 1st of November, you’ll even be able to pay off your tax through direct debit monthly, splitting the cost across many pay-cheques and leaving you with more money in the month to spend on things that matter; no longer do you have to save for your car tax renewal! You can also pay by direct debit bi-yearly or annually. Providing that your MOT stays valid, the payments will be automatic and you won’t have to take any action until you change cars or wish for the direct debit to stop.
